Intermediate / Advanced Slab Building
Join Verity Howard to learn how to make asymmetrical, slab-built vessels.
Service Description
Are you interested in developing your ceramic hand-building skills? In this masterclass Verity will share with you processes that she uses in her own practice. You will learn how to use the slab building technique to create an a-symmetrical vessel form and methods for cutting and altering to create works with recesses, angles, and curves. To get the most from this workshop some experience with clay is recommended. Verity Howard (BA Hons Three-Dimensional Design, Manchester School of Art, 2015) is an artist who uses clay as a medium for drawing and monoprinting to create sculptural, slab-built, ceramic forms. These works explore mystery, trigger memories, generate atmosphere, and evoke a sense of place. Verity takes inspiration from the landscape, history, and culture surrounding her in rural Herefordshire. Workshop Details: The workshop will start with a demonstration of the basics of slab building and how to create an a-symmetrical vessel form. You will then be able to start slab-building your piece of work. Break for lunch (please bring along something for lunch as this is not provided). Verity will demonstrate how to cut and alter your form and you will then have a chance to try this out on your vessel. Lastly, Verity will demonstrate techniques for finishing and refining the works and you will be able to apply these processes to your forms. At the end of the day, you will have completed your a-symmetrical vessel form which will then be bisque-fired at Cabalva for collection. If you don't have access to a kiln we can also glaze your work with one of our standard glazes. This workshop will help in developing your confidence and skills to create more complex and refined slab-built pieces and will hopefully inspire you to continue with these techniques in your work. The course price includes everything you will need on the day including dedicated work space, clay, tools, and bisque firing. A light lunch, snacks and refreshments will be provided.
