Service Description

If you want to turn your hand to porcelain and develop your throwing skills this three-day workshop will be perfect for you. Jo Davies is a ceramic artist specialising in wheel-thrown porcelain. She makes work that appears to be fresh off the wheel, even when it’s finished and fired ceramic, that balances softness with rigidity, smoothness with weight, and tactility. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Jo has worked with the National Portrait Gallery, Hepworth Wakefield, Mulberry, Somerset House, and the National Trust, amongst others. Jo is a very experienced teacher, tutoring at West Dean College and lecturing at Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute in China, Brighton University, and UCA Farnham. She has recently published her first book ‘Electric Kilns for Ceramics’ with the Crowood Press. Over these three days, you will build on basic wheel-throwing skills and work your way through to more challenging shapes according to your skill level and confidence using porcelain. Jo will start every project or exercise with demonstrations, discussion, and practical guidance so you will only be asked to do things you have been shown how to make and then supported while you practice. There will be projects set by Jo, beginning with a simple exercise in making cylinders on the first morning and then you will be guided through how to make more challenging items using a creative but intentional approach. If you have some experience of throwing you will be able to join this course and Jo is very experienced at working with different experience levels in one group so whatever level, you start with you will have gained skills and improved confidence by the end. The three-day course is £495 per person, which includes everything you will need on the course, a dedicated wheel space, lunch, and refreshments throughout the day. You will also have open access to the studio from 5-8 pm on Friday and Saturday to continue practicing. We will be firing two or three of your favourite pieces, additional firing can be agreed during the course. At Cabalva we pride ourselves on developing a community of like-minded potters in a beautiful location overlooking the Wye Valley. To ensure you get the most out of this weekend workshop, places are limited to four people. If you need assistance finding local accommodation, please get in touch. *Please note this course requires a full cohort of 4 participants to run.*
